পর্তুগীজদের কাছে আবিষ্কারের স্বর্ণ যুগটি বড়ই অহংকারের সময় ছিল, আজও বোধহয় ওরা সেই গর্বে গর্বিত। সেই সময়ে পর্তুগালের ব্যবসা বানিজ্যের প্রচুর প্রসার হয়েছিল, অর্থনীতিতে জোয়ার এসেছিল। আর সেই স্বর্ণ যুগকে মনে রেখে পর্তুগীজ বিংশ শতাব্দীর গোরার দিকে বিশ্ব মেলায় প্রদর্শনের জন্যে তৈরি হয়েছিল বিশাল এই স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ – Padrão dos Descobrimentos।
লিসবন শহরকে জড়িয়ে আছে বিস্তৃত Tagus নদী। আর এই নদী তীরের বালেম অঞ্চলেই পনেরো থেকে ষোল শতাব্দীতে সমুদ্র পথে পর্তুগীজদের আবিষ্কারের স্বর্ণযুগের সূচনা হয়েছিল বলা যায়। আর আজও সেই স্বর্ণযুগের নামী, অনামী বহু নাবিক, যারা দুঃসাহসিক সমুদ্র অভিযানে গিয়েছিল ও ভারতবর্ষের সঙ্গে মসলার ব্যবসার জন্যে জাহাজ নিয়ে সমুদ্র পথে পাড়ি দিয়েছিল, তাঁদের কথা স্মরণ করায় Padrão dos Descobrimentos স্মৃতি স্তম্ভ।
